SHAVERDIAN

1900-1977

Profile & Bio

Ruben Shaverdian's life was divided between Georgia and Armenia. He was born in 1900 in the small picturesque Georgian town of Sighnagi. Soon after the death of his father the family moved to Tblisi to be closer to relatives. Shaverdian stayed there until 1941 and was greatly influenced by the magical charm of this city and its unique tradition of creativity, stressing a combination vibrant colour with originality. He received his artistic education at the school of painting and sculpture at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. His teachers included, Yeghisheh Tatevosyan, B. A. Vogel and A. Salzman. After graduating, he became a regular participant in prominent art exhibitions and associated more and more with the Armenian creative community in Tblisi, Armenian writers, poets, artists and composers. In 1941, along with his family, he moved to Yerevan, and became inextricably linked to his rediscovered homeland. His paintings and sculptures of the Armenian period reflected a deep connection with the land of Armenian, the warmth of the sun and soul of the people. One of his favourite motifs is that of a mother surrounded by children. His unique skills were recognised in 1965, when he was awarded the title of “Honoured Artist of the Armenian SSR”. Two years later, he was awarded the title "People's artist of the Armenian SSR". For over fifty years his name was associated with the development of Armenian art. He was one of the first to realise the rich possibilities of decorative art as an independent form of artistic creativity. He was tireless, and remained true to himself and his artistic passions his entire life.
