AVETISSIAN

Born in 1969

Profile & Bio

Born in Yerevan, Narek Avetissian is widely recognised as the most influential artist of post-soviet Armenia, representing the first generation of the Armenian avant-garde. Graduating from the P. Terlemezian Arts College, he then continued advanced studies at the Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Yerevan from 1988 to 1992. From 2011 onwards, he has been a member of the Artists’ Union of Armenia. Narek Avetissian works in different media: painting, video, animation, music, and light installations. Founder: The Artist Group "Act" Sharing the same conviction as his friends and colleagues, Avetissian founded the artist group “Act” with the aim of taking a closer look at the mutual relationships between Science and Art, and the newly evolving alternative ways of thinking. The group expressed this in various closed social structures through both conceptual means and political actions. The group enthusiastically embraced the newly founded independent Republic of Armenia. They adopted the motto “New State, New Art” to reflect their hopes and aspirations. The group’s principles were on full display during the “Art” demonstrations, a widely influential event performed in 1995. The principles they advocated were taken up by the Armenian contemporary art community and are still considered valid today.
